The one thing to know first

An image load is not proof that a person read an email. Gmail and Apple Mail load images on their own, and security scanners fetch links and images. A tracker that calls every load an “open” shows a high number that means little. A real click, a confirmed reply is much stronger evidence. Whichever tool you pick, ask what it counts as an open.

The shortlist

1. EmailSavy FREE & FOCUSED

A tracker that only tracks: opens and link clicks in Gmail and Outlook, replies in Gmail. Every email is Read (confirmed), Opened (likely), Delivered / preview or Not opened, with the reason in plain English, and scanner clicks and your own opens are filtered out. Free for unlimited emails with a small footer.

  • Honest Read / Opened (likely) / Delivered / Not opened
  • Click tracking on the free plan
  • Place and device shown only when we know them
  • No CRM, no sequences, no noise
  • Gmail readers show as Opened (likely), not Read, unless they click or reply
  • Pro checkout is not open yet
  • Reply detection can miss replies

2. Mailtrack

Read receipts for Gmail, now sold under the Mailsuite name. Its free plan tracks unlimited emails but keeps only the first open, and link clicks are limited to 10 emails. EmailSavy vs Mailtrack

3. Streak

A CRM inside Gmail. Email tracking is one tool next to pipelines, contacts, tasks, mail merge and automation, and the free plan includes email and link tracking. EmailSavy vs Streak

4. Yesware

A sales engagement suite with tracking, multi-channel campaigns, templates, a prospector, meeting scheduling and reporting. The free plan has basic open tracking; unlimited link tracking starts at Pro. EmailSavy vs Yesware

How to choose

If you want a CRM in Gmail, look at Streak. If you run a sales team that wants campaigns and reporting, look at Yesware. If you want a simple read receipt, Mailtrack is built for that. If you want a small tracker that tells you how sure it is, try EmailSavy. All four have free plans, so try the one that fits.

Frequently asked questions

Can you track email opens in Gmail for free?

Yes. EmailSavy's free plan tracks unlimited emails (open and click tracking, reply detection in Gmail) and adds a small footer. Mailtrack, Streak and Yesware also list free plans; what they include differs, see the table (checked 2026-10-17).

Why do email open counts look inflated?

Gmail and Apple Mail load images through their own servers, often as soon as the message arrives, and security scanners fetch links and images too. A tool that counts every image load as an open reports opens nobody made. EmailSavy shows an Apple Mail or early Gmail load as Delivered / preview, a Gmail load after 5 minutes as Opened (likely), and reserves Read for a real click, a reply whose arrival time we could confirm, or repeat opens from a real device.

Can any tracker prove a person read an email?

No. An image load is not proof of reading. A click or a reply is much stronger evidence. EmailSavy says which kind of evidence it has.

Does tracking work if the recipient blocks images?

If images are blocked the tracking image does not load, so nothing is recorded from it. EmailSavy adds more than one channel in Gmail and Outlook (pixel, hidden pixel, CSS and font), so a block on one may not block all, but it is not a guarantee. Clicks still work.
